I remember a whimsical song that said there’s a hole in the bucket dear Liza, and it told the story of a man who wanted to complain about the hole in his bucket but had an excuse for everything related to fixing it.
Kind of the way we are sometimes during our Christian walk. Praying out of need but doubting out of lack of relationship. Believing in God requires that we spend enough time in study and prayer to develop a foundation that will support our belief.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.” James 5:5-8
“Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. Mark 11: 22-24
It doesn’t matter what the request is because God allows us to petition Him for the desires of our heart, however the qualifier is that the request be void of doubt. Doubt is the hole in the bucket of faith which creates a zone of weakness.
The word teaches us that each of us is given “the measure of faith” which would imply that we’re all give the same level of faith. Why then can we find ourselves questioning the depth of the faith that we possess? I don’t that there is one complete answer to that question but I do however believe that trust has a lot to do with it.
How can develop a deeper level of trust in God? One way would be to spend time reflecting on each day and use that opportunity to reflect on the things that God has done for you. Know that there’s no such thing as luck! Review that accident you almost had, three seconds more and it would have been fatal.
The promotion? God’s favor!
The person you ran into that set the stage to open doors for your business? God!
That friend that can your way to give you an encouraging word when you were feeling out of it? God!
That person who came your way just when you were about to blow up and stick your foot in your mouth, who distracted you long enough for you to calm down? Definitely God!
It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” Since we have that same spirit of faith, we also believe and therefore speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you to himself. All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. 2 Corinthians 4: 13-18
What’s the best way to fix the hole in your bucket? Trust in the Lord with all your heart!
